How I broke out of hustle culture
On Tuesday, January 5th, 2021, I quit my job.
I told myself — and everyone who’d listen — “this will be my last job,” and then made a commitment: make freelance editing work.
At that time, I knew almost nothing about finding clients, staying disciplined, and running a business.
I’d been in a tumultuous on-again/off-again relationship with freelancing for years and cheated on it the whole time with fear.
In the end, I couldn’t figure out how to make enough money — and I became complacent — then ran back to a corporate.
I call any job “corporate,” because they’re run by corporations.
I hated my corporate. Almost every second was torture. Working for other people feels like slitting my soul’s throat.
No matter how much money they pay me. Or how hard they work to make the work meaningful for me.
I wanted to work with people.
So, this time, I was going to make freelance editing work.
